Woman learns during long flight that her husband is someone’s boyfriend, and for this other woman, she is just the ‘side chick’

Lines have been drawn!

A hilarious situation unfolded on a recent long-haul flight, confirming what many pet owners secretly fear: to the cat, you’re just the “spare human.” A couple traveling from New York City to Los Angeles realized their Scottish Fold, Phoebe, has firmly established her relationship with her “boyfriend,” who just happens to be the poster’s husband.

The viral video, shared on Instagram under the username @phoebe.thescottishfold, captured the exact moment the cat threw shade at her mom. The clip shows the adorable white-and-orange feline snuggled right up to her dad, giving him a full-body hug on his lap, before turning her head to deliver a perfect, icy “side eye” to the camera.

According to Newsweek, the video’s caption perfectly summarized the drama, reading: “My girl cat giving me the side eye on the plane while cuddling with her boyfriend (he’s my husband). I will forever be the spare human.”

I feel her pain. I am the spare for my dogs

The owner, 28-year-old Samantha Resurreccion, explained that she and her husband were seated separately on the flight, which set the stage for the betrayal. Samantha said that when she looked over at her cat, Phoebe locked eyes with her and then immediately ramped up the cuddling with her husband. Samantha found the moment hilarious, and clearly, millions of others agreed, finding it relatable. The reel quickly soared past 7 million views and 474,000 likes.

The comments section exploded with solidarity from people who know exactly what it’s like to be relegated to second place. One user commented, “Welcome to being the side chick. I was the side chick with our first female cat. She would even try to get in between us on the sofa.” Another user declared simply, “That’s her husband now.”

Honestly, if you’ve ever felt like your pet secretly judges you or has favorites, this video is absolutely mandatory viewing. For Samantha, this isn’t a new development; she admits that Phoebe is very much a daddy’s girl. In fact, the cat’s entire social media page is full of videos about Samantha being the “third wheel” between her husband and her beloved feline.

This brings up a fascinating question: why do cats pick a favorite person and treat everyone else like a spare tire? Experts explain that cats aren’t actually aloof and instead bond most strongly with the human who makes the greatest effort to understand their specific cues and behaviors. However, their personality comes into play too.

This cute interaction is a great example of how pets and their reactions bring joy to our lives. A hilarious encounter with your pet is definitely better than having an unpleasant encounter with another passenger about seats.
