Woman says no to a man’s entitled request, he reminds her she is ‘lucky’ he chose not to make her life ‘miserable’

"I could have made you pay.”

A woman traveling solo on a packed red-eye flight was verbally threatened by a male passenger after landing because she refused to switch her pre-booked aisle seat with him. This incident, reported by Newsweek, occurred during a flight from Los Angeles to Newark, highlighting just how quickly tensions can boil over when people feel entitled to something they haven’t paid for.

The traveler, Smart_Choice_317, shared her story on Reddit, saying she had specifically booked her preferred seat, an aisle seat. Before the flight started, a middle- aged man approached her, as well as several other passengers seated in the same row, asking if they would switch seats so that he could sit near his wife. They all, including a younger woman who had the middle seat, declined.

While the couple remained separated during the flight, they reportedly spoke loudly across the aisle to each other. That’s already annoying enough, but the real drama didn’t kick off until the plane landed.

If you want a seat, pay for it

As passengers began to disembark, the man absolutely erupted. He first shouted at the woman in the middle seat, demanding she move out of his way. According to the original poster, he yelled, “GET OUT OF THE WAY. THAT’S RIGHT I KNOW YOU HEARD ME MOVE.”

Then, he turned his hostility directly toward the original poster. He apparently told her, “You’re just lucky you were sitting next to my wife.” And the threats didn’t stop there. He then turned back to the middle-seat passenger and added, “You’re just lucky I didn’t make your life miserable on this flight. I could have made you pay.”

Other women seated nearby were equally shocked by the man’s conduct and joined the original poster in reporting him to a gate agent. The traveler noted her hope that the airline staff would actually follow up on the complaint. She did mention that the wife didn’t seem mortified at all, writing that the woman “was going on and on about, ‘how she takes this flight all the time’.”

It’s easy to see why the online community overwhelmingly condemned the man’s actions. As one commenter put it, “Tough talk for a man too cheap to pay for seating assignments. I bet he’s the king of the Dollar Tree, too.” Another person simply noted, “People lose their minds when they travel, [shake my head]. So sorry that happened.”

This sort of encounter isn’t isolated. We keep seeing stories circulate about passengers who expect others to give up valuable seats. In one case, a traveler recounted being asked to surrender her $7,000 business-class seat so a mother could have her daughter, who was booked in economy, experience the premium cabin. There are also many stories of passengers intentionally taking up space and causing discomfort.
