Woman went on a dinner date with a guy she met on Hinge. By the end of it, she had one piece of dating advice for others: ‘Run at the first red flag’

They had a somewhat awkward FaceTime conversation before the date.

A woman named Samara said in a series of TikTok videos that a man she met on Hinge took her to dinner in Toronto and ordered only two small dishes before claiming he was too full for more food. She stated that he later asked her to buy his matcha ice cream and that she paid for it. Samara, who posts under the account @samraoncamera, described the night as one of her worst dates and told viewers to act on early warning signs.

The first TikTok video, captioned “Part 1 of my date with a stingy man,” had reached 1.2 million views. Samara said the man was 6 feet 5 inches tall with a good build and worked in tech sales. She explained that they had texted, sent voice notes, and spoken on the phone many times before he asked her out, and that he had a nice voice on the calls.

She said she suggested a FaceTime call the day of the date because she already had makeup on and wanted to check their connection in person. During the call, she said his face dropped, and he told her, “Oh, you look kind of different” and “not what I was expecting,” adding that she looked a little tired and mentioning bags under her eyes. Samara said she rarely gets bags and thought the comments might have been a form of negging, but she let it go and continued the conversation.

The woman recounts the restaurant choice, the limited order, and the rest of the night across three videos

In the first video, Samara said the man first suggested Miku Sushi, which she looked up and found to be a fancy place. She stated that he tried to reserve it the night before and learned it was booked for a corporate event. He then quickly proposed Chado Mate, and she said he made a 7:30 p.m. reservation. She noted that he had earlier told her the spots were pricey and asked her not to go overboard.

At the restaurant, Samara said the waitress explained that the dishes were meant to be shared and that people usually ordered several items. She stated that the man ordered an eight-piece sushi plate and asked what she would get, so she chose the spicy chicken. She said she ate three pieces of sushi while he ate the rest. When the chicken arrived, she said he took only two or three pieces of the sliced breast and told her, “Oh, the rest is all you,” claiming he had eaten a large chicken salad lunch.

Samara said she had skipped breakfast and eaten only a matcha and a chocolate croissant around 2 p.m., expecting a proper dinner. She stated that she did not push for more food because she did not want to embarrass him. She said he paid the bill and they left around 8:30 p.m. after arriving at 7:30 p.m.

In the second TikTok video, Samara said they walked the streets looking for dessert. She stated that she mentioned her back hurt from carrying bags and asked him to hold her backpack for a few minutes. She said he hesitated but then carried it for the rest of the night. They headed to a matcha shop on Dundas Street that was about to close at 9 p.m.

At the shop, Samara said she ordered soft serve, and he picked a matcha latte with ice cream. She stated that he then asked her, “You’re gonna get this for me, right?” She said she paid the roughly $20 total and felt ready to go home. She later wrote that she would have been fine with a burger place or pizza shop if he had suggested something cheaper.

Samara said the man walked her all the way to Union Station and her platform. After a hug, she stated he lingered and asked if she was a good kisser. She said she refused, told him, “I don’t kiss on first dates,” and gave him another hug before heading to her train. She stated that he texted later, “You’re so much cuter in person, not gonna lie,” which she viewed as a backhanded compliment. The next day, she said, she thanked him for dinner and ended contact.

She also said heavy talking before the date had created a false sense of closeness. She advised viewers, “Run at the first red flag and try to meet up sooner rather than later so that you don’t waste your time like I did.” Bad dating-app behavior can show up in many forms, such as when a woman’s Hinge date claimed he didn’t use Apple Pay, leaving her with the bill.

In a third video on TikTok responding to a comment, Samara said the man had warned her ahead of time, “Oh yeah, it’s kind of pricey here, so just like don’t go overboard.” She stated that the waitress had pointed out the small portions and that he still ordered only the sushi and one chicken breast. She said he then stopped eating and claimed he was full after about five pieces of sushi. She added that she was not upset about the amount spent but about the mismatched expectations of a full dinner.

In her first video, some viewers focused on the early signs she described. One wrote, “I have to stop listening to this. Once a guy insults you and you still talk to him, it’s on you.” Another commented, “Lots of red flags – both of you.” Awkward first-date moments can take many forms, such as when a Houston woman ordered extra food after her date refused to pay and told him why she needed it canceled.

A third said, “Dude that’s on you, this is going to come off as shallow but it’s just plain honesty. You based your attraction on his looks rather than his personality, that mentality is not dating maturity. You should take a step back from dating.”
