A checkout stop at a grocery store turned into a multi-part argument after a customer said staff told her only two items had been scanned, even though she said her cart was full. The woman, who posts on TikTok as @oksmitty23, shared the exchange in a series of clips. The first video has gained 376,600 views. In the caption, she wrote, “No way she accuse me of stealing! Am I right or wrong?”
The clip opens at the register with a female employee in a navy blue shirt. The employee said, “only two things scanned? Only two things got scanned in this cart.” The customer, who was filming, answered, “Yeah. Okay, so you’re telling me that out of all of this stuff-” before the employee cut in with, “I just saw it.” The customer asked, “You just saw it?” and the employee replied, “Yeah, I did.” The cart in the video appeared to hold cereal, bread, drinks, and other groceries.
The employee then said, “Okay, everything up here. I can go print out your receipt if you like,” and called out, “F, I need you up here now.” The customer said, “Let me show you this,” and held up a longer receipt. In the video, the receipt appeared to list a total of $109.86 for 42 items. She asked why the employee had not been shown that a minute earlier. The employee said, “You- I didn’t- I didn’t get a chance to.”
The receipt check moves from the register to the exit
The employee said she had asked where the restroom was and had seen only two items on the first receipt, so she asked for a second one. She named those items as Frosted Flakes and something else. The customer asked, “Okay, so you just accused me of stealing?” The employee said, “I just said, could you- I’m gonna look. I came out of the bathroom and I’m just asking you for your other receipt, and you only had 2 items on the other receipt.”
A male employee in a navy blue polo arrived and told the customer, “You can just go, ma’am.” She started to answer, “I don’t even have- Sir, can you- But I, I should be. I should be because,” and the first clip ended there.
In the second TikTok video, captioned “Can’t believe she accused me of stealing. Am I in the right or wrong???” on-screen text read, “Part 2” and “She told me I only scanned 2 things and called for back up.”
The customer, described in the clip as a woman with long blonde hair in a navy long-sleeve shirt and jeans, kept asking if she had been accused of stealing. The male employee said staff checks receipts when a cart looks fuller than the paper in hand.
He said, “So if you hand somebody a receipt, you have a cart full of stuff with 2 things, I’m gonna ask for another receipt as well.” She asked if he was accusing her too. He said, “No, I’m not accusing you.” Receipt disputes at Aldi have led to accusations of shoplifting, as when staff in Minnesota escorted a customer out after misreading her receipt.
The camera then showed him pushing the cart toward the doors. She said, “I’m being- he’s escorting- he’s taking my things out of the store with my purse. My purse is in that cart.” She also said, “I don’t even have Frosted Flakes in my basket at all.” He turned back and said, “Ma’am, I’m sorry, we’ve had a really long day.”
In the third TikTok video, captioned “They accuse me of stealing and forced me out the store!!” she followed him through the vestibule and repeated that her purse was in the cart. He said, “I’m sorry, we’ve had a really long day. Can you please just leave?” She answered, “So because you had a long day, it’s okay for you to accuse people of stealing?” He walked off with, “Have a good night.” She said she would report it and asked his name. He answered, “Peyton.”
She turned the camera toward another shopper in a black puffer coat and said the staff had accused her of stealing, adding, “I had it all on camera though.” She then asked where her receipt was. An off-screen voice said it was in the cart with the items that had been taken. Peyton walked back, and she told him he had removed her cart, purse, and items without permission. He asked, “I do something wrong?” She asked, “Did I do something wrong?”
In the fourth TikTok, Peyton said, “No, but you’re being rude,” when she asked again if she had done something wrong. She said, “Look at how aggressive these guys are,” as the camera briefly showed a female employee in a dark blue polo walking past the self-checkout lanes. He said he had asked her a question and was asking her to leave. She asked why he had touched her cart if her purse was in it. He began, “Because…” and she interrupted.
He walked toward the exit. She asked, “What you gonna do, touch me?” He said, “No, but you need to leave.” She repeated, “What are you gonna do, touch me? I wish you would.” She said she was being escorted out after being accused of stealing even though she had a receipt for everything in the basket.
He said, “Hey, I am sorry for that misunderstanding, but you need- you’re not making it no better. You’re very rude.” She answered that he had moved her purse and items out and was treating her as if she had done something wrong after she spent money there. He walked back past the lanes. She then said, “This is Arby’s, Ramsey, Minnesota.” The clips themselves are tagged with Aldi hashtags, and the employees in the videos appear in navy store shirts.
Viewers on the first video split over who should have cleared up the two receipts sooner. One commenter said the short receipt made the stop look suspicious and wrote, “But honestly why only show her the receipt with two things ? You KNOW that look sketchy af.” Another said the customer should have produced both papers and wrote, “Sounds like she asked for 2 receipts and you only gave her one.”
A third said the second receipt, or a simple explanation, would have been enough, writing, “She could have shown her the other receipt or simply said I have more than one transaction.”
Others pushed back on receipt checks in general. One wrote, “That’s why I never show my receipt. It’s none of their business.” Another wrote, “Lawyer up and sue.” Receipt checks at store exits have drawn plenty of debate, as when a Wisconsin woman completed shopping at Walmart only for an employee to allegedly print an extra receipt to check her cart.
