A woman’s grocery shopping trip in Louisiana turned into an unexpected act of generosity after a New Orleans Saints rookie quietly paid for a stranger’s groceries. Leslie Pedigo shared the encounter in a recent Facebook post, saying it happened while she was shopping at a Rouses Market in Metairie, a suburb of New Orleans. According to Pedigo, she was already unloading her groceries onto the checkout conveyor belt when a man carrying a single bag of fresh shrimp stepped in line behind her.
Wanting to help him get through the line faster, Pedigo told the cashier, “Go ahead and ring him up first. He only has one item.” She wrote that the man smiled and thanked her before placing his shrimp next to her groceries and asking the cashier to ring up everything together.
Pedigo immediately objected. “I immediately told the cashier, ‘No, don’t do that. He doesn’t have to buy my groceries,'” she wrote.
“My Momma always taught me to do good deeds.”
According to Pedigo, the man responded with words that caught her off guard. “My Momma always taught me to do good deeds, and I’d like to bless you today. Please don’t take that blessing from me.”
Pedigo said she accepted the gesture after hearing his explanation. “He paid for my groceries, grabbed his shrimp, looked at me and simply said, ‘God bless you,’ before walking out,” she wrote. “I stood there speechless.”
The story did not end there. Pedigo said another customer asked if she knew who had just paid for her groceries. When she admitted she did not, the customer told her it was a New Orleans Saints player.
She hurried outside, introduced herself, and learned the man’s name. “He reached his hand out and said, ‘I’m Christen Miller,'” Pedigo wrote. When she asked if he played for the Saints, “He smiled and said, ‘Yes, ma’am.'” Pedigo said Miller agreed to take a photo with her before continuing on his way.
Reflecting on the encounter, she praised the rookie’s humility. “Christian never acted like he was somebody important. He never sought attention, never expected recognition, never made the moment about himself. He simply chose kindness when no one was watching,” she wrote.
Addressing the Saints directly, Pedigo added, “To the New Orleans Saints… you didn’t just draft an athlete. You drafted a young man of character.”
Miller joined the Saints after the team selected the defensive tackle with the 42nd overall pick in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The former University of Georgia standout earned Associated Press first-team All-SEC honors during his final college season. Over four years with the Bulldogs, he appeared in 43 games, recording 64 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, and 4 sacks.
Pedigo ended her post by saying the experience changed how she will watch football this season. “Truth be told, I don’t know much about football. I’d usually choose dragons and fantasy novels over Sunday games. But this season, I’ll be cheering for my new favorite player. Not because of what he does on the field, but because of who he proved himself to be in a grocery store checkout line. Who Dat,” she wrote.
