A lot of crazy things have happened during a basketball game, but players, fans, and even the announcer were left speechless after an unexpected rubbery guest boinged across the court during a crucial moment in last night’s WNBA Golden State Valkyries v Atlanta Dream match.
The score was 75-75 with just a minute left to play when there was a flash of lime green from the crowd, and play was stopped. The announcers were confused as to what was going on, saying “something flies onto the court from the crowd…”, as fans and officials blocked the view of the object. Then, in what may well be the end of some poor camera operator’s career, a close-up was aired on TV.

The culprit? A neon lime-green rubbery sex toy. The announcer was briefly lost for words, muttering “Oh my gosh. OK, OK. Inappropriate.”. Then, presumably addressing the fan who smuggled the offending object into the arena, she said, “Get ’em outta here, whoever it is”.
How did that make it through security?
Play resumed and Cecilia Zandalasini scored to give the Valkyries a 77-75 victory, but it’s safe to say her last-second short jumper isn’t going to be the most-talked-about event of the match. Comments on X appear to be loving the drama and surrealness, saying that this is “the most entertaining thing to happen in a game all year”, wondering “how did that make it through security?”, and being impressed that it was hurled “with that much velocity”.
Others consider this a little offensive and potentially sexist, given that this was a WNBA match, saying that the culprit should be in jail:

That said, the players themselves seem to have found it amusing. Zandalasini later mentioned the incident: “First of all, it was super dangerous. And then we found out what it was, I guess we just started laughing”.

Whoever tossed that onto the court may have ensured a minor place in WNBA history, though it’s unlikely they’re going to be allowed into another game anytime soon. Either way, here’s hoping this doesn’t start a trend, or the poor arena janitors are going to deserve a hefty raise.
