Professional sports these days are bursting at the seams with children of former professional athletes. And one of the most prominent American athletes getting ready to suit up on one of the world’s biggest stages (maybe the biggest?) this upcoming weekend hails from lineage with a pro background — Kansas City Chief’s quarterback Patrick Mahomes II.
Mahomes, who is 27 years old, is already playing in his third Super Bowl this upcoming weekend against the Philadelphia Eagles, in just six seasons of professional football. The charismatic NFL quarterback, who has plenty of airtime with endorsements as well — including a running campaign with All State — was probably familiar with sports fans before he even hit the big time.
One reason being his background in collegiate football as well, where he set the single-game passing yardage mark and single-game total yards of offense mark with astounding and nearly unbelievable totals of 734 yards passing and 819 total yards in an Oct. 22, 2016 game against the Oklahoma Sooners. In his earlier years at Texas Tech University, though, he also played for the baseball team before giving way to become a football player full-time, and that’s where his lineage comes into play.
The father of Patrick Mahomes II is the senior-named Patrick Mahomes, a Major League Baseball player from 1992-2003, who was better known as Pat Mahomes. The now 52-year-old elder Mahomes was well-know by baseball fans in the ‘90s, mostly for his stint with the New York Mets from 1998 to 2000, when he helped the team make the ’98 playoffs and was part of the team that eventually reached the World Series in 2000, where they lost to The New York Yankees (Mahomes was left off the roster, but that isn’t entirely uncommon for relief pitchers to have their roles changed up in the postseason).
Mahomes Sr. had two children with his ex-wife, Randi Mahomes, née Martin, who is originally from Tyler, Texas. Randi is quite active on social media, including on Twitter and TikTok, where she shows tons of support for her son, among other things.
Patrick Mahomes II was born in 1995 in Tyler, Texas, and grew up in Texas as well. The elder Mahomes pitched for the Texas Rangers, which play in Arlington, just outside of Dallas, during the 2001 season. With that knowledge, it makes sense that the younger Mahomes knew how to hone his skills throwing in multiple sports, both a pitcher in baseball and a quarterback in football.
This year’s big game, Super Bowl LVII (57), is scheduled to start at 6:30pm EST on Fox.
