A Florida State University student has caused outrage online after posting a video of a victim bleeding out on the ground while she casually walks by with her Starbucks drink in hand.
It seems as a society we are becoming more and more desensitized to violence. We see it all the time online and in movies and even in reality. Unfortunately, school shootings like the one that occurred at FSU this week are fairly commonplace in the U.S. Last year there were 83 school shootings according to CNN. However, nobody seems eager to make any changes to gun laws anytime soon.
On Thursday that suspect Phoenix Ikner, 20, allegedly gunned down two people and injured five others. Ikner is reportedly the son of a local sheriff’s deputy Jessica Ikner and he even spent some time training with law enforcement prior to the attack. When apprehended, Ikner was found to be carrying a former service weapon used by Jessica.
The controversial video
The true aftermath of this tragic shooting is yet to become fully apparent. However, one video taken on scene has caused a great deal of controversy already. The clip shows a person, clearly one of the victims of Ikner, bleeding on the ground. The person filming seems completely unphased by the situation as they casually stroll past with a Starbucks cup in hand. They don’t try to assist the person, or call for help.
It seems more and more common for people to respond to events like this by pulling out their phone and recording rather than actually helping.
The video angered many due to the apparent lack of empathy displayed by the individual recording. On TikTok many voiced their frustrations with the person behind the camera, TikToker, @daadisnacks, addressed the person saying, “I wish you nothing but the worst.”
In another video, someone else who saw the video asked where the empathy and compassion was.
Some have tried to defend it
Despite the person recording clearly being in the wrong, some people in the TikTok comments section tried defending her. One person asked, “What was she supposed to do?” while another wrote “Yall keep saying she should have helped or comforted the person…SHE DOESN’T HAVE TO.” Clearly this lack of basic humanity is becoming a pandemic.
Statistically a few psychopaths will end up reading this, if you think the person in the video did nothing wrong then you might be one of them. Most humans will stop to help, or at the very least call 911, unless they’re afraid for their own life. What they won’t do is record someone bleeding out while sipping a Starbucks.
