She ended up stabbed more than 25 times.

In February 2026, a Connecticut judge sentenced Pedro Grajales to 30 years in prison for the 2023 stabbing death of his girlfriend, Nilda Rivera, in a case that began with what appeared to be an ordinary date: a stop at McDonald’s.

The sentencing, handed down in Hartford Superior Court, followed Grajales’ guilty plea to murder in a case prosecutors described as premeditated and driven by jealousy.

What happened to Nilda Rivera?

On April 19, 2023, Grajales and Rivera visited a McDonald’s in Hartford. According to court documents cited by Law & Crime, the couple ordered food and ate together in the parking lot. Rivera did not indicate that the outing would be her last.

After finishing their meal, Grajales drove to a more secluded area. Arrest warrant affidavits state that he had concealed a knife and repositioned his driver’s seat backward to give himself room. He then stabbed Rivera more than 25 times while she sat in the passenger seat.

According to the probable cause affidavit, after the killing, Grajales allegedly sent photos of Rivera’s body to a man he believed she was seeing. Authorities said Grajales later drove directly to the Hartford Police Department with Rivera’s body in the vehicle and confessed to murder.

According to the arrest warrant, Grajales told police he believed Rivera had been unfaithful. Investigators said he had grown increasingly suspicious and had planned the attack in the days leading up to it.

Prosecutors described the killing as deliberate and fueled by jealousy, though no evidence publicly confirmed any infidelity. The premeditation — including bringing a knife and adjusting his seat for mobility — became key elements in the case against him.

Who was Nilda Rivera?

Rivera, 57, was from New Britain. Family members described her in interviews as a devoted mother and grandmother who was deeply committed to her loved ones. In coverage by FOX61, her daughters remembered her as someone who “didn’t deserve to die” and who had been looking for companionship later in life.

Her death stunned relatives and community members in both New Britain and Hartford. While much of the public record centers on the violent circumstances of her death, loved ones have emphasized her role as a parent and grandmother first.

Grajales was arrested the day of the killing in April 2023 and charged with murder. He remained in custody throughout the proceedings. In December 2025, he pleaded guilty, avoiding a full jury trial. In February 2026, a judge sentenced him to 30 years in prison.

Under Connecticut law, he will serve the sentence within the state correctional system. Because he entered a guilty plea, the case did not proceed to trial, and additional evidentiary details were not publicly litigated in open court.
