‘For their own pleasure’: Texas 3-year-old was perfectly healthy. Then his mom drops him into an surgical nightmare by insisting he wasn’t

Kaitlyn Laura, a 31-year-old Texas mom, was arrested in March on a charge of injury to a child — serious bodily injury, which is a first-degree felony under Texas State Law. She also faces an additional charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The allegations against her paint a grim picture of what her 3-year-old son reportedly endured.

Per People Magazine, the core of the accusations centers on Laura’s claims that her son had cerebral palsy and was unable to walk. She reportedly insisted he use a feeding tube and a wheelchair, despite evidence suggesting the child was perfectly healthy.

According to an arrest affidavit, Laura repeatedly told the gastrointestinal team at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth that her son had “eating problems.” However, the boy’s father completely denied these claims, stating that the toddler was eating “without an issue.” Despite this, the child was given a feeding tube through his stomach.

Medical staff, though, quickly grew suspicious. They reportedly saw the boy “eat multiple meals by mouth” even as Laura continued to claim he was having problems with the feeding tube. He even attempted to stand while his mother insisted he use a wheelchair. 

The alleged medical abuse was first reported to Child Protection Services (CPS) in June 2025. This happened after doctors concluded that the medical conditions Laura claimed her son had were either false or greatly exaggerated, and that all the treatments he received were completely unnecessary. 

The alarms continued to ring in October 2025, when a concerned teacher at Laura’s son’s school reported the alleged abuse to CPS again. The educator stated that the boy ate solid food and “ambulates about campus independently without the use of his gait trainer or wheelchair.” Laura then removed her son from the school.

In January 2026, the 3-year-old had yet another invasive surgical procedure to place a new feeding tube. Laura allegedly asked for him to be readmitted in February, claiming complications with the tube, and even requested that he be placed in a “posey bed,” which is a tent-like enclosure system used for high-risk patients. Thankfully, the boy was placed into foster care on February 14, providing him with much-needed protection.

Further details reveal that Laura also gave “conflicting” accounts of her son’s birth, allegedly telling Early Childhood Development that her son had a “traumatic birth.” Five months later, she reportedly claimed to Cook Children’s Health Care System that her son “needed oxygen at delivery.”

The allegations against Laura, particularly her insistence on medical procedures for a seemingly healthy child and the conflicting accounts of his condition, sadly echo cases of Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Per Medline Plus, this isn’t just a physical abuse; it’s a mental illness and an insidious form of child abuse where a caretaker, most often a mother, either invents fake symptoms or actually causes real symptoms to make a child seem sick.

Caretakers involved in such situations often possess a surprising amount of medical knowledge. Between their ability to describe symptoms in detail and their involvement with the healthcare team, they appear as devoted parents rather than abusive. The child ends up with frequent hospital visits, numerous tests, surgeries, or other procedures, even when their symptoms don’t fit any specific disease or match test results. 

Diagnosing this condition is challenging because it requires keen observation and a thorough review of the child’s entire medical history. Children affected by this abuse often need medical and psychiatric care to address the emotional fallout.

Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn didn’t hold back, stating, “This narcissistic person, for their own pleasure of getting the sympathy for having a fragile child, is what we see playing out in front of us … the child is being tortured.” He added, “There are scars on his body from those surgeries that weren’t necessary, and he’s going to have to be told, ‘Why are they here?’ So there could be trauma for many, many years to come.”
