The incident occurred in a Walmart parking lot on Saturday April 11 around 10:59 AM local time. The as yet unnamed man was taking a nap in a Black Hyundai Sonata which was in the parking lot while a female family member was shopping inside according to Lt. Monique Rodriguez of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (via People).

Unfortunately for the sleeping man the car had been left running with the doors unlocked. As the man was sitting back, completely unaware in the passenger seat, an opportunistic thief decided to hop in the unlocked car in an attempt to steal it. Of course, with the sleeping man still in the vehicle this was essentially a kidnapping as well as theft

The suspect drove out of the parking lot at a high speed and shortly afterwards they rammed it into a minivan before spinning out of control and crashed it into a pole and then a boulder. While the driver was able to make it out alive the poor victim was not so lucky. The driver and passenger of the van also involved in the collision escaped with only minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital to be seen to.

A horrific way to wake up

Lt. Rodriguez said “The man in the passenger seat woke up to another man essentially kidnapping him,” which is certainly a terrifying way to be woken up. However, police believe that the victim and suspect, who has since been named as 55-year-old Harold Allen, did not know each other and that this was a “crime of opportunity.” Allen likely saw the vehicle was running and unlocked and decided to try and steal despite there being an innocent person in the passenger seat.

Allen, who allegedly has an “extensive criminal history,” was arrested soon after the incident and was later charged with open murder with a deadly weapon, grand larceny of a motor vehicle, and kidnapping. He is currently being held in Clark County Detention Center.

The identity of the man killed in the accident is expected to be released by the Clark County Coroner’s Office at some point in the future. The investigation into the horrific theft/kidnapping/collision is still ongoing.
