A Nevada man told police he met friends to play video games, or so he thought. Instead, the casual meet-up went south quickly, and that man has now found himself involved in a shooting that left another Las Vegas man dead.
Investigators say the suspect later admitted he sensed danger before the violence unfolded, telling officers he “should have known something was up,” especially after one man arrived with a rifle in his pants.
According to an arrest report and coverage from the Las Vegas Review-Journal, on April 16, police took 19-year-old Elijah Harris into custody in connection with the fatal shooting of Victor Powell in the southeast Las Vegas Valley.
Police say on April 10, Harris initially believed he was meeting acquaintances at his apartment for a casual hangout to smoke pot and play video games.
But authorities allege the gathering was instead part of a planned robbery that escalated into deadly violence.
Powell’s death captured on camera
Investigators with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department say the incident unfolded when Powell, 59, was confronted and shot during what they describe as an attempted robbery after the group left Harris’ apartment to meet someone for an undisclosed reason. Vegas’ news outlet KLAS later reported it was a drug deal gone wrong.
After being shot, Powell attempted to drive away but crashed into a nearby building, where he was pronounced dead.
After the shooting, Law & Crime reports Harris returned to the apartment first. When the other men returned, they said they “messed up” and the meet-up “wasn’t supposed to go like that.”
On April 16, Harris reportedly called the police to discuss what happened but provided a fake address because he was “scared” before police took him into custody.
Surveillance video captured the attack, and clothing worn by suspects in the footage, as well as a rifle, rifle cartridge, and magazine were recovered, linking Harris and the other men to the case.
Details in the arrest report indicate that multiple individuals were involved, and at least one other suspect, Emoni Stallworth, 19, has been taken into custody in connection with the crime.
Harris remains in custody as prosecutors prepare to move forward with formal proceedings. As of the latest reports, no trial date has been announced, and additional investigative steps may still be underway as detectives continue to piece together each suspect’s role. Police have also not ruled out the possibility of additional charges or arrests, noting that homicide investigations often evolve as new evidence emerges.
