North Carolina men meet for Grindr date. Then cops make a horrific discovery in one man’s vehicle

Probably didn't mention this in his profile.

Several men in Zebulon, North Carolina, were inside a home while three of the four children of the man they were there to meet were dead in the trunk of his car in the garage of the house, according to search warrants viewed by local news outlet WNCN.

As had been widely reported, Wellington Delano Dickens III, of Zebulon, the man who allegedly contacted men on Grindr for dates after killing his children, called 911 on October 27, 2025, and told dispatchers what he’d done. Deputies who responded found a 3-year-old son alive inside the home, but in the garage, they uncovered what they described as “multiple bodies in the trunk of a vehicle.” Investigators later determined the remains had likely been there for “a long period of time.”

Law enforcement identified the deceased as Dickens’ 6-, 9-, and 10-year-old biological children and his 18-year-old stepson. Investigators believe the deaths did not happen all at once but were spread out over several months in 2025. The bodies were in an advanced state of decomposition, complicating immediate identification.

How investigators linked Grindr to the case

Search warrants filed in January 2026 show that after the gruesome discovery, detectives obtained access to Dickens’ phones and electronic devices, uncovering text communications tied to his Grindr account. Messages obtained from his phone suggested that several people he had connected with on the dating app, “frequented the home during the time span of the murders taking place,” and may have been physically present in the residence while the bodies lay in the garage. There’s no indication that any of the men knew about Dickens’ children’s remains.

One warrant specifically sought additional information from Grindr, including chat history and location data, to help authorities understand who visited Dickens’ home and when.

According to reports, while Dickens admitted to deputies that he killed the children, he offered troubling and inconsistent accounts of how they occurred. Authorities say he claimed that punishment and severe neglect, including withholding food, led to the deaths of his older children, though those assertions have not yet been independently verified by medical examiners.

The children’s mother, Dickens’ wife, Stephanie Rae Jones Dickens, died in April 2024 from complications of a miscarriage. Authorities ruled her death natural, but the children’s deaths began shortly after her passing.

Court documents also reference a fifth child: Dickens told investigators that a newborn son died in 2023 and that he buried the infant in a wooded area behind the home. Deputies have searched the area but have not recovered the body.

Where Dickens is now

Deputies immediately took Dickens into custody after arriving at his home following the October 911 call. He now faces four counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of his children and stepson, and remains held without bond pending further hearings.

Prosecutors have indicated they will pursue the death penalty in the case, noting the severity and duration of the alleged crimes. Dickens’ next scheduled court appearance is a status hearing set for March 2026. Social services agencies are also reviewing their past interactions with Dickens and his children.
