Around 7:40 PM on Wednesday police were called out to the UMass Campus Center Hotel after receiving reports of an emergency. Soon after arriving a “violent struggle” broke out between officers and Jeffrey MacDonald, a 36-year-old sous chef at UMass Amherst Dining, as per the New York Post. The suspect reportedly threw objects at the police with some officers being struck in the face.

Eventually they were able to subdue MacDonald before entering room 413 in the hotel. Inside they found the dead body of Emma MacDonald, a 31-year-old member of staff at the university, she was also Jeffrey’s wife.

According to a police report Jeffrey admitted to killing his wife, telling police that he beat her “to death using his hands, feet, as well as a variety of other objects.” He also allegedly stated that it was “his intent to kill his wife in doing so.”

Jeffrey MacDonald’s arrest

Emma was pronounced dead at the scene with investigators concluding that “her injuries had resulted from a violent assault.” Jeffrey was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder along with one count of assault and battery upon a police officer. During his arraignment on Thursday he pleaded not guilty.

Prior to his arrest MacDonald had been an exemplary chef. He was named “Chef of the Year” by the American Culinary Federation in 2025 in recognition of his “talent, leadership, and commitment to advancing the culinary profession.”

At the time MacDonald showed gratitude for the award, “Being honored as Chef of the Year by the ACF is an incredible milestone,” he said, adding, “I’m grateful for the support of my colleagues at UMass Dining and the inspiring culinary community that I’m fortunate to be part of.”

Following his arrest an email was sent out by university officials stating that there was no threat to the campus. The email stated that Emma’s murder was “heartbreaking and deeply unsettling news,” while acknowledging that “the lack of complete information may add to the distress many are feeling.”

The investigation into the incident is currently ongoing so not all of the details have been made public. Meanwhile Jeffrey MacDonald is being held in jail without bail with his next expected court hearing scheduled for May 22nd. His attorney has reportedly requested he be evaluated for competency to stand trial.
