Pregnant woman kidnapped at gunpoint across state lines to force abortion — her quick thinking landed him in federal prison

Even the DA was shocked.

Kevin L Smith’s crime was so vile even the District Attorney was shocked, which is something he thought was a sensation he had lost in his many years of experience dealing with criminals. But Smith’s story of abducting his child’s mother at gunpoint to bring her across state lines and force her into having an abortion was something few people thought was actually possible.

Smith has just been sentenced to 188 months behind bars. And when he does finally get freed, he’ll be under state supervision for 3 years.

In a recent case about a Wisconsin dad actually going ahead to shoot a baby, there’s already been a disturbing precedent set that when someone is absolutely determined not to be a parent, there are no lengths to which they won’t go. Smith, 39, and his victim were expecting a child together. But there was a disagreement between the two on whether they should have the child or not and Smith wanted an abortion by any means necessary.

The two lived in St. Charles, Missouri, and owing to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, that means the closest Planned Parenthood was at Fairview Heights, Illinois. So Smith drove up to the victim’s work in Dec. 2022 and threatened her with a gun, then started driving to Illinois, where he planned on forcing her to get an abortion.

She saved herself and her baby

Wisely, the victim was secretly texting a relative about their current whereabouts. The relative called the police, and by the time the two were at the parking lot of Planned Parenthood in Illinois, cops were waiting for them. They were able to disarm Smith, and luckily, the victim also left the scene without any harm.

Cafe Mom reports that after the conviction, U.S. Attorney Steven Weinhoeft said:

“It is not easy to shock law enforcement officials because we have pretty much seen it all — but then someone like Kevin Smith comes along. It is difficult to find words adequate to describe someone who would kidnap his pregnant girlfriend to force her to have an abortion at gunpoint and then continue to threaten her from jail. This vile crime terrorized the victim and threatened the life of her unborn child. Smith deserves every minute of that prison sentence.”

When he was arrested, Smith was charged with two counts of aggravated kidnapping armed with a firearm, which is a Class X felony. Later on, legal authorities added a Class 2 felony for a felon possessing a gun. And finally, a Class 3 felony of unlawful restraint.

The case was deliberated for 3 years, but on Oct. 1, Smith admitted that he was guilty of aggravated kidnapping as a deal so that he could get leniency from the court. Truly an unthinkable crime, and as the DA mentioned, there’s such a narrow window for redemption for such behavior. Hopefully, he can build from this admission and do some more good in his life. It’s gonna take a lot for him to get back some good karma.
