Rob Reiner and his wife Michele told friends they were ‘scared’ of son Nick’s ‘deteriorating’ mental health

Less than 24 hours before their deaths, Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner expressed concerns regarding the mental health of their son, Nick. The couple even apparently told friends that they were “scared” by his erratic behavior.

Unfortunately, it seems like Rob and Michele may have been right to be scared as L.A. firefighters would be called to their residence less than a day later where they would find the couple dead. As for Nick Reiner, he is currently in police custody and believed to be the prime suspect in what has since been confirmed to be a murder investigation.

Nick was said to have been “acting crazy” while attending a Christmas party hosted by Conan O’Brien on Saturday night. A source told PEOPLE that Rob and his son got into a “very loud argument,” the night before the crime. One of the sources explained that “Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous.”

The 32-year-old had joined his mother and father at the event, but according to a neighbor, both had previously confided in friends that they were “scared” and worried for their son as “his mental state was deteriorating.”

During the Christmas bash, Rob and his son had a falling out. An old friend of the Reiners revealed that Nick had supposedly been off drugs for a while but during the Christmas party he was “not so much off them,” according to an article from the Daily Mail. According to the friend, Nick was addicted to a “combo of opiates and heroin,” and had even spent some time being homeless.

Nick had been spiraling for quite some time according to numerous outlets and Rob and Michele had seemingly been doing everything they could to care for him. The relationship between father and son had been rocky for at least a few months as the son was also allegedly seen screaming at his father over dinner at a restaurant in Santa Monica a few months ago.

Following the death of his parents, police quickly tracked Nick Reiner to a motel close to the Santa Monica pier. Officers raided the hotel room and found a shower “full of blood” as well as blood on the bed and windows that had been blacked out with bedsheets.

It’s alleged that Nick stabbed his parents to death and the suspect is now being held in police custody with no bail. He will likely be facing federal murder charges.
