Shootout leads to death and injuries after man tries ambushing U.S. border patrol

Violence is never the answer.

A violent confrontation happened on Monday morning in McAllen, Texas, leading to the death of a gunman and injuries to three immigration officers after an attempt to ambush a United States Border Patrol facility. The incident involved a man carrying a rifle and wearing tactical gear, which led to a fast response from law enforcement.

According to TMZ, the deadly gunfight took place at the entrance of a U.S. Border Patrol building in McAllen, a city close to the U.S.-Mexico border. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the event happened around 6:00 AM local time. The attacker, later identified as Ryan Louis Mosqueda, a 27-year-old man from Michigan, started shooting at the facility, firing many dozens of rounds toward the building and the agents inside.

Border Patrol agents and local police officers quickly arrived at the scene and worked together to stop the threat and take down the shooter. Three people were hurt during the attack. These included two officers and a Border Patrol employee. One of the officers, who had been with the McAllen Police Department for 10 years, was shot in the knee. All three injured people were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The injuries of the officers were not life-threatening, and the police officer was expected to recover. Officials said some of the injuries were caused by broken glass when bullets hit the building’s windows. No federal officers were reported to have been directly shot or wounded by the attacker’s gunfire.

Investigations into Mosqueda’s background showed he had no known criminal record. He had been reported missing from an address in Weslaco, Texas, a town about 18 miles east of McAllen, just a few hours before the shooting. Police reports stated that Mosqueda’s father had called authorities earlier, worried about his son’s mental health and the fact that he had firearms in his car. Mosqueda had driven to Texas in a vehicle with Michigan license plates.

When law enforcement searched the scene, they found more weapons, ammunition, and backpacks inside Mosqueda’s white two-door car. A noticeable detail on the car was the phrase “Cordis Die” painted on the driver’s side door. This Latin phrase, meaning “Day of the Heart,” is linked to a fictional revolutionary group in the Call of Duty: Black Ops II video game, which tries to weaken capitalist governments.

Of course, this may have had something to do with immigrants not getting due process and tourists being questions if they’re pro-Trump. At first, McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said the meaning of the graffiti and its connection to the attack were unclear, but later, the link to the popular video game was pointed out. The incident also sparked discussion about its possible motives and wider implications.
