In 2014, two 12-year-old girls, Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, lured their sixth-grade classmate into a quiet Wisconsin park with murder on their minds. Geyser and Weier shared a fascination with internet ‘creepypasta’ stories and became fixated on the supernatural figure of Slender Man.
The two girls fell into a shared delusion that Slender Man was real, and would attack them and their families if they didn’t sacrifice a victim in his name. They selected their classmate Payton Leutner and told her they were playing hide-and-seek. As soon as she was hidden, the two girls pounced, viciously stabbing Leutner nineteen times.
Miraculously, they didn’t hit any major arteries. The preteen attackers fled, with Leutner crawling to a road where she was discovered, and emergency services summoned. Both attackers were committed to mental health institutions: Weier received a sentence of 25 years to life, and Geyser was sentenced to 40 years to life.
Now, eleven years into her sentence, the now 23-year-old Geyser absconded from her group home, sliced off her ankle monitor, and vanished into thin air. Madison, Wisconsin cops put out a statement saying she was last seen at 8 pm on Saturday with an adult acquaintance. Her attorney, Tony Cotton rapidly put out a statement also theorizing she was being assisted on the run:
“Obviously, it’s in her best interest to turn herself in immediately and not continue with this course of action. We don’t know any of the facts about what happened or who might’ve assisted her. But certainly, if there is someone who might’ve assisted her, that person will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
He also put out an appeal directly to Geyser:
If anybody has contact with Morgan, hears from her, or if Morgan happens to see this, turn yourself in, Do not continue to remain on the run like this. It is not in your best interest to handle this matter that way.”
Crisis averted
Geyser was considered the more dangerous of the pair, with cops who interrogated her after the Slender Man attack saying she showed no empathy or guilt for her crimes. As such, she was given a sentence of 40 years to life, and was supposed to be under supervision until 2058.
In 2014, Geyser was diagnosed with early-onset childhood schizophrenia and is reported to have “cyclic regressions into psychosis” which means she cannot distinguish delusions from reality. She was on antipsychotic medication for this issue, but the danger was heightened as, once on the run, she wouldn’t have access to her meds.
However, thankfully, a late update from the Madison cops confirms that she has been recaptured and is now back in custody. Here’s hoping we get some more details soon, though it appears that neither Geyser nor any member of the public has been injured.
