‘Something’s wrong’: Idaho twins who disappeared in the dead of night found safe, but the internet wonders why they keep fleeing their home

"What the heck is going on here?" one comment asked.

In the early hours of August 27, 2025, 10-year-old twins Kiya Jo Eliassen and Arianna Lynn Eliassen vanished from their home near Mt. Hall School in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Authorities noted that the twins have a history of hiding in outbuildings and barns, urging residents to check these areas thoroughly.

By August 28, the Boundary County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the twins had been located and were safe. However, this incident has sparked widespread concern online, with many questioning why the girls continue to flee their home.

“It’s very worrisome”

Though unconfirmed, one commenter noted, “According to several posts on FB, their mother passed away in a car wreck when they were young. They have lived with their father and step-mother and with foster parents since. There was talk of using GPS monitors and such and the girls needing more punishment.”

Another said, “It’s very worrisome that they would go missing in the middle of the night, especially knowing they’ve run away from home before. What the heck is going on here?” And finally, “Something’s wrong if they’re repeatedly trying to escape their own home,” a comment said.

The Boundary County Sheriff’s Office reported that the girls left around 2 a.m., possibly riding on a blue and pink bicycle. In a follow-up post, the Boundary County Sheriff’s Office said in part, “An observant citizen contacted the Boundary County Sheriff’s office at around 745pm 8-28-2025 with information that ultimately led to the safe recovery of the missing Eliassen twins.

The update added, “Boundary County Deputy Tony Jeppesen responded and located footprints in the area. Boundary County Search and Rescue’s K9 team responded along with Border Patrol Agents. We were also aided by an air asset equipped with FLIR. [Combining] their efforts, the team was able to locate the twins, ensuring their safety.” No further details were provided. The Eliassen family has not publicly commented on the situation.
