10 Easter Eggs You Might Have Missed In The Defenders

After two years and five seasons of television, Marvel's The Defenders is finally here. The eight episode miniseries unites the stars of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist for the first time. Naturally, it also follows in the footsteps of those shows by featuring a lot of tantalizing easter eggs, references and callbacks.

7) The Leader Of The Hand

At the end of episode 6, “Ashes, Ashes,” Elektra shockingly kills Alexandra and announces that she’s taking control of the Hand. This is a surprising development within the show itself, but fans of the character in the comics will know that there’s a precedent for this idea.

While the Black Sky storyline is original, Elektra has been the leader of the Hand before in the source material – just like in the show, she rose to the top after she’d been resurrected by them to be one of their warriors. However, it was later revealed that she was acting as a double agent, hoping to bring the organization down from the inside.

We also find out that the Hand is led by five individuals of different nationalities – or “Fingers,” if you will – who originally hailed from K’un Lun. In the comics, the five Fingers of the Hand each come from one of Japan’s five islands.

6) Misty’s Missing Arm

In the final episode, suitably titled “The Defenders,” Misty Knight loses her right arm thanks to Bakuto. Later on, Colleen tells the recovering cop that Danny has paid for her to be placed in a high-end hospital that offers “state-of-the-art” care and might be able to help her.

This is presumably setting up Misty to match her comic book counterpart. On the page, Misty gains a bionic right arm – designed by Tony Stark, no less. After the accident, she leaves the force and becomes a private investigator alongside Colleen Wing. Together, they call themselves the Daughters of the Dragon.

The fact that the pair are together at the end of the show surely has a deeper meaning, then. With Simone Missick set to reprise Misty in Iron Fist season 2, it looks like we’ll see the Daughters team up pretty soon. Especially as Misty’s career will likely be in trouble now, considering her alliance with the vigilantes.

The detective also wears a new red leather jacket in The Defenders, which Claire draws our attention to in episode 1. This is a nod to Misty’s red jumpsuit in the comics.
