The 25 Best Episodes Of NBC’s Community

I'll preface this by saying that compiling a list of the top 25 Community episodes so far has been the most difficult task I have ever encountered as an entertainment journalist. The cult NBC comedy, which premieres its fifth season tonight, has maintained a rabid fan following for a reason; its unique blend of character-driven humor and meta commentary puts it in a totally different class from any other half-hour comedy series currently airing on television.

1. Remedial Chaos Theory (Season 3, Episode 4)

The Story: When Troy and Abed throw a housewarming party, the group gathers for a fun evening of pizza and board games. When Jeff decides to throw a Yahtzee die to determine who goes to retrieve the pizza, Abed considers six different realities that could play out dependent on which number is rolled.

Why It’s Earned Its Place: The single most brilliantly written episode of Community, “Remedial Chaos Theory” is rightly considered to be one of the finest sitcom episodes of all time. The high-concept narrative structure, huge laughs and strikingly well-placed moments of character development in the episode all combine for sheer comedic perfection. “Remedial Chaos Theory” pulls together themes from all of Community‘s other episodes to present the show at its most multi-faceted. It’s alternately moving, dark, exhaustingly funny and thought-provoking. Above every other episode of Community, “Remedial Chaos Theory” will be remembered as a genuinely genre-redefining half-hour of television.

Best Quote: “There’s no such thing as “Single Malt Platinum Boobs and Billiards Club”? Aw, I guess I never said it out loud.” – Jeff, realizing that Troy and Abed have duped him to ensure that he kept his calendar open for their party.
