Season 3 of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. got off to an eventful start with “Laws Of Nature” this past Tuesday, and things look set to get even more interesting if this first clip from next week’s episode, “Purpose In the Machine,” is anything to go by.

At the end of season 2, the duplicitous Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) forcibly installed himself as the new leader of HYDRA, and it seems he’s taking his job very seriously indeed. In this sneak peek, the former S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent and his new sidekick terrorize who we assume was once a high ranking HYDRA official in an attempt to begin weeding out the “soft, entitled” element that Ward believes led to the organization’s downfall in the first place.

So who’s this “kid” Ward is looking for? Well, there are many possibilities, but the prevailing fan-theory is that it’s Alexander Aaron, AKA Phobos – son of the God of War Ares, and member of the Secret Warriors. That remains to be seen of course, but one thing’s for sure: Ward means business, which means Coulson and co. better be ready.

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns on Tuesday, October 6.
