Amazon’s ‘Cruel Intentions’ show gets its leading stars

The 'Cruel Intentions' reboot over at Amazon has reportedly found its cast.

Amazon’s Cruel Intentions remake was picked up for an eight episode run back in April. Now, Variety has reported that their publication has received an exclusive tip about the main cast list.

The logline of the series was also revealed, and it follows the original movie pretty closely:

“Two ruthless step siblings who would go to great lengths to stay on top of the social pyramid. In this case, their focus is the Greek life hierarchy at an elite Washington, D.C. college. After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Panhellenic system, they’ll do anything to preserve their power and reputations, even attempt to seduce the daughter of the Vice President of the United States.”

Reportedly, Sarah Catherine Hook (known for First Kill) is portraying a character named Caroline, Boy Swallows Universe‘s Zac Burgess is as Lucien, Khobe Clark (Yellowjackets) is Scott, Brooke Lena Johnson (You) is Beatrice, Sara Silva (The Boys) is CeCe, Sean Patrick Thomas (who starred in the original Cruel Intentions) as Professor Chadwick, John Harlan Kim (The Last Thing He Told Me) is Blaise, and Myra Molloy (He’s All That) is Annie.

Meanwhile, Laura Benanti (Younger) appears in a recurring guest role as Claudia, Caroline’s mother, while Jon Tenney (The Closer) appears in a recurring guest role as U.S. Congressman Russell.

The original Cruel Intentions was based on Les Liaisons dangereuses (also known as Dangerous Liaisons) by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. The 1999 original starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair. The film involves two stepsiblings (Gellar’s Kathryn and Phillippe’s Sebastian) making a dangerous (and cruel) wager over a girl (Annette, played by Witherspoon) who wants to remain pure before marriage. Though the film received a mixed response (with the cast’s chemistry and performances being praised), it’s gained a cult following in the years since, and was followed by the dubious prequel Cruel Intentions 2 in 2000 and dubious sequel Cruel Intentions 3 in 2004. An off-Broadway musical also hit the stage in 2015.

The series is set to be written and executive produced by Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman. Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film will executive produce. Moritz also produced the original film, and has been trying to get a continuation or remake off the ground for some time. Back in 2016, he actually produced a pilot for a potential follow-up film, set to focus on Gellar’s character.
