It’s fair to say there isn’t another filmmaker in the industry quite like Steven Soderbergh, who always ensures that he remains as busy as humanly possible, especially during that time he was supposed to be retired.
The Academy Award-winning director of Traffic, Out of Sight, Haywire, Logan Lucky, the Ocean’s trilogy and many more besides saw his latest episodic series Full Circle debut on Max just yesterday, but he’s already got another one releasing on Monday that he managed to shoot entirely in secret without anybody finding out.
Financed and shot independently – and to be distributed on Soderbergh’s own Extension 765 website – the cast features Michael Cera, Roy Wood Jr., Chloe Radcliffe, and Liev Schreiber among others. The announcement came via cryptic announcement from the aforementioned company, which is somehow ominous while also revealing absolutely nothing.
“I think by now you’re used to me describing the somewhat mercurial behavior of our boss, Mr/Dr Soderbergh, but this most recent development is next level and can’t be kept to myself for reasons you’ll soon understand… If I seem hedgy, it’s because A) None of us have seen it; and B) it’s apparently about ninety minutes long, but there are eight episodes of varying length, so is it an actual series or just a movie cut up into pieces?”
That’s about as vague as you’d expect, then, but Soderbergh’s more experimental fare is always worth checking out to see just what he’s been getting up to on his latest unexpected cinematic detour, so Command Z will no doubt generate plenty of interest as a result.
