Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz is currently at work on a fifth season of the brilliant comedy. While we haven’t heard much about Netflix’s plans for it just yet, we now have an idea of what the main storyline may be, and it’s certainly not at all what we expected.

Apparently, the original plan was to have Jeffrey Tambor’s character, George, become a woman. However, given that Tambor is currently starring in Amazon’s Transparent, which features a similar plot, that idea was scrapped.

Now, Hurwitz wants to make season 5 a murder mystery in the vein of Netflix’s buzzy Making a Murderer. He wouldn’t go into any detail on what exactly that means, but the main story arc will revolve around what happened in the season 4 finale.

It’s an interesting idea, and one that could probably work well in the wacky world of Arrested Development. We’re just hoping that the execution is a little better this time around. Last season was definitely enjoyable but was also more than a little messy at times, and in the end was probably the weakest outing for the show.

Still, this is Arrested Development we’re talking about, and having the characters make their way through a murder mystery could prove to be a lot of fun, It’s still early days, of course, but as of now we’re intrigued by Hurwitz’s idea and are excited to see how it all pans out.
