Arrow Will Address Felicity’s Future Death In An Upcoming Episode

Arrow season 7 has introduced a new narrative device for the show: flashforwards, which take us to the Star City of tomorrow as an older William Clayton, Oliver Queen's son, and Roy Harper AKA Arsenal investigate what's happened to their old friends and family. One of the biggest shocks at this glimpse into the future so far is that Felicity Smoak will apparently meet her end in a grisly fashion. We’ve still got a few weeks to go until we learn the full story behind this, but showrunner Beth Schwartz has promised that the answers will definitely come out.

Arrow returns for its midseason premiere, episode 7×10, this week and episode 16 is apparently where we can expect the mystery of Felicity’s demise to be cleared up. In the meantime, we’ll get a better feel for how much Star City itself has changed, with Schwartz explaining the following:

“We’re going to learn a lot about it in the next couple of episodes, but definitely [Episode] 16 is going to be the answer to that mystery and what’s been going on in the Glades. In [Episode] 10, actually, we see the Glades for the first time, and we meet Rene (Rick Gonzalez) in the future, which is exciting. We get to see, as terrible as Star City is, the Glades is a booming city, and that’s the happy place of the future. And Rene has a lot to do with that. So we’ll see that in 10 and then, yeah, the next couple episodes will start answering a lot of these questions.”

Seeing as this would be a grim fate to dish out to one of Arrow‘s most popular characters, fans are generally in agreement that all’s not how it seems. We’ve been told that Felicity went down a dark path in this future, adopting her father’s codename of “The Calculator” and eventually running afoul of the city’s criminal population. While this would be in keeping with some extreme measures Felicity’s been driven to this season, a common theory is that her criminal career and death were faked for some unknown reason.

TV Guide put this to Schwartz in their chat with the executive producer. Obviously, she wasn’t going to spill the beans, but again promised that episode 16 would provide the revelations fans are so desperately craving.

“Well, I definitely can’t say yes or no to that, but there’s definitely a lot more to that mystery that will unravel in the next few episodes, especially in 16.”

Be sure to catch Arrow 7×10 “My Name Is Emiko Queen” this Monday, January 21st on The CW.
