Aside from tomorrow’s admittedly low-key third-place playoff against Belgium, England’s World Cup dream is over for another year.
But while football isn’t coming home, the iconic TARDIS is, now that the BBC has announced plans to air the very first trailer for Doctor Who season 11 during Sunday’s World Cup final between France and Croatia. That means we’re only a few days away from our first official peek at Jodie Whittaker as the iconic Time Lord – fitting, really, as it’s almost a year to the day since she was revealed as Peter Capaldi’s successor.
Said footage is due to premiere during the BBC’s half-time coverage of the World Cup final, which is expected to attract around 10 million viewers despite the fact that England are no longer in the competition. As for what we can look forward to, well, an early glimpse of Jodie Whittaker in action is all but certain, along with some possible shots of her newfound companions, Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill.
Only two of those cast members will be joining Whittaker at next week’s San Diego Comic-Con, where we’ll likely learn much more about what showrunner Chris Chibnall has planned for the show’s first female-fronted installment.
In anticipation of SDCC, Entertainment Weekly has already gone ahead and conjured up its exclusive double issue. Its cover star? Jodie Whittaker as the thirteenth Doctor, who’s ready and willing to make this series her own.

Said to be “hopeful and fizzing with wonder,” this year’s historic ten-episode installment of Doctor Who is headed for an October premiere on the BBC.
