5. Aziz Ansari – Buried Alive
Much of Aziz Ansari’s earlier material was about how weird it was for him to become so famous so fast, rubbing elbows with high-profile celebrities like Kanye West when he still hadn’t adjusted to being a celebrity himself. It was funny material, but maybe didn’t entirely click with people who were turned off by all the humble bragging. Ansari has since grown considerably, both as a comic and just as a human being. Having turned 30, his focus is now on more grown-up stuff like getting married and having kids.
The result is that his newest special, the Netflix-exclusive Buried Alive, is his strongest work yet. Gone is the stage-prowling swagger of his last two specials, replaced by a thoughtfulness and earnestness that, while it may not result in the punchline density of his earlier work, is generally more satisfying. Oh and don’t worry, he hasn’t grown up too much. There’s still a pretty funny bit about dick pics (which you can watch below).
