Last weekend’s penultimate Doctor Who episode, “World Enough and Time,” ended with a whopper of a cliffhanger. Apparently, the Doctor’s latest best pal Bill has been converted into a creepy old-school Cyberman. How the heck will the Time Lord save his friend? Is Bill stuck as a Cyberman forever? These are the questions fans want answered.
During a Facebook live Q&A after a special screening of the episode in Cardiff, showrunner Steven Moffat and Bill herself, Pearl Mackie, were on hand to tease fans with what to expect going into the finale. First off, Moffat joked that this is really it for the Doctor’s companion. Or at least, we hope he was joking.
“She’s a Cyberman from now on. She’s one of those ones in the trailer actually. She was just killing people. That’s the way it is sometimes.”
On a more serious note, Mackie was asked by a fan if it was “emotional filming the death of your character in these last few episodes,” and here’s how she replied:
“I mean, I’m quite an emotional person, so it was pretty emotional, I mean even just reading any of it and at the read through it was quite emotional because there’s a lot of endings. I think that’s credit to Steven’s writing that you can get that kind of emotion from it when you read it that you’re supposed to get when you watch it.”
Mackie’s answer is intriguing, as she doesn’t deny that Bill will die in the finale. Also, what does she mean by “a lot of endings.” Is Bill not the only one for the chop? Is Missy, or perhaps Nardole going to die as well? There’s also the Doctor himself to consider, whose oncoming regeneration was teased at the beginning of the episode.
In other news, Moffat also revealed that work has not yet been completed on the finale, despite it airing in a few days. “We haven’t actually, finished episode 12 yet! We haven’t seen the finished version,” the writer said. This leads more credibility to the theory that new scenes are currently being filmed, probably involving the Time Lord’s regeneration – and possibly even the next Doctor.
The highly-anticipated Doctor Who season 10 finale, ominously titled “The Doctor Falls,” airs this Saturday at 9PM on BBC America. Will you be tuning in? Do let us know!
