In the latest round of casting news for CBS’ upcoming Supergirl show, former Ally McBeal star Calista Flockhart has signed on to appear as a series regular. Touted to play Kara’s boss, Flockhart’s arrival will find her reunited with former Brothers And Sisters executive, Greg Berlanti.

The series – based on the popular DC Comics character – is set to become the third DC TV spinoff shepherded into production by Berlanti following Arrow and The Flash. It’s believed that Flockhart’s decision to return to network television was due to Berlanti’s involvement. Whatever the reason, the actress will now be joining Whiplash‘s Melissa Benoist, who snagged the lead role of Kara Zor-El, Mehcad Brooks as love interest Jimmy Olsen, and Laura Benanti as Supergirl’s mother.

To get caught up to speed, here’s an early logline for the show:

Since arriving on Earth, the Krypton-born Kara has been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin, Superman. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.

With the first round of supporting characters already in place – where will Flockhart slot in? According to Variety, she is set to play “Cat Grant, a self-made media magnate and founder of CatCo, where Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist) works as her assistant. Cat started her career as a reporter and has built her company into a global powerhouse.”

Whereas Flockhart has in the past snagged roles that were less dominating, the fact that she’s signed up to play a self-made global powerhouse is a promising prospect indeed.

A co-production between Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions, Supergirl is expected to enter production shortly.
