Word of Patrick Stewart’s Star Trek second coming first broke in 2018, though we’ve since learned a number of fascinating details about CBS’ planned revival, including the fact that it’ll be very, very different from The Next Generation. It’ll also feel like a 10-hour movie, according to Stewart, who was in attendance at the London premiere of The Kid Who Would Be King last night, where Red Carpet News (h/t TrekMovie) caught up with the industry legend to discuss all things Trek.

Indeed, it was here when Stewart confirmed that CBS is currently plotting three seasons of his standalone Picard series.

In returning to Star Trek later in the year, the one thing that will be different about this version of Star Trek is that we have simply moved the whole narrative 20 years from when I last wore Jean-Luc’s uniform [Star Trek: Nemesis]. So, everything has aged. When the series gets released you will see things are very different than what they were. We are set up for possibly three years of this show, so if there is a film, it’s a long way off.

Alas, this spinoff series may come at the expense of a big-screen appearance for Patrick Stewart’s Star Trek hero, given the actor also noted how the three-season run will ensure he’s kept incredibly busy for the foreseeable future. It’s unfortunate, of course, but considering how Trekkies have spent decades pining for a fully-fledged TV series based on Picard’s twilight years, we’ll take what we’re given.

Further details of Patrick Stewart’s Star Trek series will likely emerge in the coming weeks and months, so keep it locked.
