Christopher Lloyd has reacted to a hilarious meme pointing out some of the phonetic similarities between two of his acting roles. Lloyd — who made a cameo appearance in season three of The Mandalorian, responded to an image on Twitter that connects his portrayal of Commissioner Helgai with that of what is perhaps his most famous character: Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown in Back to the Future.

The meme pokes fun at the pun of The Mandalorian’s title, which sounds similar to the brand of car used by Emmett and Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly to time travel in Back to the Future. Across all three installments, the leading characters use a specially made version of a DeLorean automobile to crisscross between generations, with the sound of the car company proving all too familiar to a certain meme-maker.

Presumably keen to credit the creator, Lloyd eagerly accompanied the meme with the caption: “Who did this…”. Replying fans proved equally impressed, with many creating their own memes which likewise connected the two blockbuster franchises. One user superimposed an image of The Mandalorian alongside a DeLorean itself, while another accompanied a GIF of Emmett using a chalkboard with the caption: “Trying to explain how these two interconnect.”

“I will never not believe this clever play on the show name and you with the most famous car ever was a coincidence of casting,” another fan replied.  It marks the latest instance of Lloyd using a Back to the Future callback to reference his role on The Mandalorian, having shared to his Instagram stories a clip of his cameo with a mention of the film’s famous catchphrase. “Great Scott!”, Lloyd wrote. “Found myself in a whole new universe.”

Lloyd was one of multiple guests to show their face in season 3, episode 6. The actor appeared alongside Jack Black as Bombardier and musician Lizzo as The Duchess.

Lloyd’s response comes just days after The Manadalorian director and series producer Rick Famuyiwa discussed a timeline for the show’s fourth season, saying that the crew is “deep into starting the prep and the pre-production process,” but that a date for shooting is not yet known.
