Last time we saw Joe Dempsie’s bastard Gendry, he was busy escaping the clutches of Dragonstone with a helping hand (yes, we know) from Davos Seaworth. That was three season ago, and since then, House Baratheon has fallen into ruin following the death of Stannis.
But there may be hope for Westeros’ dormant black stag yet. When quizzed about Game of Thrones during an interview with Digital Spy, Dempsie admitted that he would “love to be involved” in next year’s penultimate season, though conceded that Gendry’s fate ultimately rests with the Powers That Be at HBO.
“I’d love to be involved. There’s a lot of unanswered questions about Gendry and the longer it goes on, the more obvious his absence becomes. I mean, God, the amount of flippin’ memes I get send on Twitter… whether they’ll bow to that pressure or not, I don’t know. But fingers crossed, because it’d be lovely to go back.”
Now fast approaching its long-anticipated climax, Game of Thrones is expected to bow out after a pair of new, shorter seasons on HBO – a conclusion that is said to be around 13 episodes in total. That raises the question as to whether the writers behind HBO’s fantasy flagship can shoehorn Gendry back into the story in such a short space of time, particularly when you consider just how high the stakes have been raised in his absence.
In closing, Joe Dempsie revealed that he is as much “in the dark as anyone else. It’s a bit of a loose end, and they don’t make a habit of leaving them untied… I don’t know. Watch this space, I guess.”
Game of Thrones will return with a truncated seventh season next summer.
