The CW Casts Ruby Rose As Batwoman

Deadline is reporting today that The CW has chosen none other than Ruby Rose to play Batwoman for them in the Arrowverse.

Gotham’s symbol of hope is ready to take the spotlight. And no, we’re not referring to a certain Caped Crusader – that’s a job for Matt Reeves.

Instead, we’d like to direct your attention to The CW, where Arrowverse architect Greg Berlanti is developing a live-action Batwoman series in tandem with Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries), who’s all set now to write and executive produce the story based on Kate Kane, Gotham’s newfound protector.

It’s making steady progress, too, as Deadline is reporting today that the network has chosen none other than Ruby Rose (The MegOrange is the New Black) to bring the titular hero to life. The plan is for her to make her debut as Batwoman in the annual Arrowverse crossover, as previously reported, before headlining her very own series, which will get a full-length pilot, as opposed to using the crossover as a backdoor pilot.

Of course, details on the project remain scarce at this early, early stage, but for more on what to expect, here’s how Deadline is describing The CW’s take on Batwoman and her story:

“Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane (Rose) soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.

You can expect Batwoman to take flight and begin filming early next year ahead of a possible release in the fall of 2019, by which point we should have a better read on that newly-announced Supergirl movie that’s set up shop at Warner Bros. and DC. As always, watch this space for more.
