Thanks to a new casting call, we might now know the identity of a comic book supervillain coming to Marvel’s Netflix universe in Daredevil season 3.

As revealed by That Hashtag Show, a character breakdown calls for an actor of open ethnicity, circa 30 year of age, to play a new series regular. Though only referred to as “Steve,” the site theorizes that the character could actually be Stanley Carter AKA Spider-Man supervillain the Sin-Eater.

28-35, 5’9-6’1, Open ethnicity. An athletic but socially awkward FBI Agent, needs structure and rules to suppress the darkness inside himself. Athletic with medium build, responsible and resourceful, hair trigger temper. SERIES REGULAR.

Debuting in the classic storyline “The Death of Jean DeWolff,” Sin-Eater was a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who was kicked out of the organization after he became too violent due to an experimental serum. Later working as an NYPD detective, Carter became obsessed with punishing – often murdering – those who had broken the law, or “sinned.”

The personality described in the above breakdown does fit with Sin-Eater’s profile fairly closely, though there are some red flags that could prevent him from arriving in Daredevil season 3. For one, his status as a Spider-Man foe could mean that he’s tied up with Sony’s anti-hero/villain movie universe. Then again, he’s relatively obscure, so it’s possible that he fell through the cracks and passed into Marvel’s hands.

Perhaps more importantly, though, Sin-Eater’s inclusion might not make sense from a story point of view. Daredevil season 2 already featured a man with an obsessive appetite for punishing criminals in Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle. To simply reheat that terrific storyline in the very next season would be a bit of a cheap move from the writers, don’t you think?

Still, if handled carefully, the similarities with the Punisher might not be an issue. That is, if THS are correct in guessing that Sin-Eater is joining the show in the first place. It’s vaguely possible that this character could be a vastly different take on Bullseye, too, who fans have been waiting to see on Daredevil for years now. Either way, we’ll keep you up to date with any further developments when we hear of them.
