Residuals have become one of the biggest talking points during the first days of the actors’ strike, and with good reason; streaming services and studios – in particular Disney – are being lambasted from all corners by former employees revealing just how little they’ve been making, with former Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight now sharing his side of the story.
The writer, producer, and filmmaker might have only been steering the ship for season 1, but he was nonetheless in a position to secure himself a deal that would ultimately see him make what he described as a “sliver” on the back-end once as the series continued reinforcing its popularity on-demand.
However, once Daredevil was canceled and ultimately removed from Netflix altogether prior to shifting over to Disney Plus as part of the entire Defenders Saga being made available to the Mouse House’s subscribers, DeKnight found himself cut out of the equation. Of course, he’ll no longer stand for it, and confirmed he’s been working to secure the entire team the money they’re due.
In a twist of cruel irony, DeKnight was directly referencing She-Hulk: Attorney at Law scribe Cody Ziglar, who shockingly admitted they’d earned a whopping $396 in residuals for scripting the episode of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series where Charlie Cox returned as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, not to mention the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. guest star and Disney veteran who trashed Bob Iger after being sent a royalty check for a whopping 10 cents.
Suffice to say, this is far from over, and Disney is right in the firing line.
