The seven-episode series was written by James Gunn.

Creature Commandos — a seven-episode animated series based on the DC Comics team of the same name — is confirmed to be in production at DC Studios, written by James Gunn.

The series comes as part of the recent announcement from DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, which outlined their future plans for the newly-branded DC Universe continuity.

Of all the announced projects, none stand out quite like Creature Commandos. Even without considering that it’s the lone animated series revealed by Gunn and Safran, the eponymous team it will follow might throw off even some of the more well-versed DC Comics fans with their obscurity.

Making their first debut in 1980’s Weird War Tales #93, the Creature Commandos are a military unit of superheroes inspired by classic monsters, such as vampires, werewolves, and Frankenstein’s monster. Indeed, nothing screams “comic book” quite like that description.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, though, Gunn seems to have taken a fair shake of creative liberty with this one, with the series reportedly being a more modern take on the team.

This squad of spooky antiheros won’t be a one-off animated endeavor, either; DC Studios intends to cast voice actors who can also bring the characters to life in live-action when the time comes for the Creature Commandos to make that jump.

Given Gunn’s penchant for wacky characters and the ever-so-subtle tongue-in-cheek manner in which he goes about most things, Creature Commandos is an absolutely delightful and, in hindsight, fitting surprise. Here’s hoping it will be the first of many instances of DC Studios embracing the power of animated projects as they set off on this new journey.

Creature Commandos has been revealed to already be in production, but there’s no word on a release date as of yet.
