DC’s Supergirl Series May Show Up On The CW After All

Last week we heard that Warner Brothers was developing a Supergirl TV series, from The Flash producer Greg Berlanti, his frequent collaborator Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family) and DC chief creative officer Geoff Johns. At the time, it was reported that the series was still in early development, and would soon be pitched around to various studios. We also heard that it would not air on The CW, the network that houses both The Flash and Arrow, but now that doesn't seem to be so finite.

Sure, the prospect of Supergirl crossing over with any of the CW DC shows seems bleak at best, but this is a list about who we WANT to see, not who we EXPECT to. And if we're playing by those rules, The Flash definitely makes the cut. The Flash and Supergirl have partnered (and even faced off) a lot in the comics, and there's no denying that Barry Allen would feel right at home on Supergirl (more so than Oliver Queen, at least). Seeing the two team up on the small screen would be the Justice League tease we've all been waiting for, and could lead to an excellent hour of television. It may be a long shot, but hey, if The Flash is going to explore the Multiverse next season, maybe there's a chance these two cross paths!

Last week, we heard that Warner Brothers was developing a Supergirl TV series from The Flash producer Greg Berlanti, his frequent collaborator Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family) and DC chief creative officer Geoff Johns. At the time it was reported that the series was still in early development and would soon be pitched around to various studios. We also heard that it would not air on The CW, the network that houses both The Flash and Arrow. Now that doesn’t seem to be so finite.

Berlanti himself spoke with CBR during PaleyFest 2014 and confirmed that he and Adler are working on the series. Unfortunately, he didn’t offer very many details about the direction they plan to head in, noting instead that it was still in the early development stages:

“We’re just starting to work on it. We haven’t gone to the networks yet, so… I’ll be happy, very excited to talk about it once we know where its home will be and that kind of stuff, but not at this moment.”

Where Supergirl finally ends up could change the direction of the show dramatically. From Berlanti’s comments, it does not seem like he’s pitched the series to the CW yet, so there’s a very strong possibility that Kara Zor-El could one day join the ranks of Green Arrow, the Flash, and various other DC Comics characters in that corner of the DC TV universe. How such an iconic, super-powered character could debut on the more grounded universe that Oliver Queen inhabits is a mystery, but we said the same thing about Barry Allen joining the party. If we’ve learned anything from Berlanti and his co-producers, it’s that nothing is impossible.

We know that the CW isn’t opposed to characters from the Super family, as seen by Smallville‘s ten-year run (which, of course, included Supergirl for three seasons), so the only question now is, does Kara belong on the CW, in film, or elsewhere on TV?

We’ll keep you updated on the Supergirl TV series as it develops.
