Dexter Review: “A Little Reflection” (Season 8, Episode 6)

Hannah returns with a flourish, adding to the already cluttered list of plots, but "Dexter" continues to rush towards an ending that doesn't seem to be in sight quite yet.

Deb’s relationship with Elway is also progressing nicely, even if Elway isn’t quite acting rationally. After enlisting Deb to seduce his sister’s cheating beau, he proceeds to act rashly and basically act like a lovesick puppy. Not that it’s a bad thing, since it’s nice to see some positivity on the show, and maybe Deb can even find a happy ending for once. I wouldn’t be disappointed if it were with Elway, since so far he doesn’t come off as a psycho.

But since us Dexter fans are notoriously suspicious, it’s possible that Elway could be the one to dig into Deb’s past and find out a dirty secret about the Morgan family. Heck, maybe even he’s the Brain Surgeon. Oh yeah, I’m still wondering about that half-baked plot line. It can’t be done that quickly. Something nasty lurks in Vogel’s past, and maybe it’s in the form of her just-now discussed husband. Who knows? Guessing at this point is useless.

Masuka’s relationship with his daughter hit a bump after he offered her money to try and find out if that’s all she want, and of course that makes her angry. It’s still great to add a third dimension to the character, but maybe last season would have been a better time?

Dexter’s relationship with Harrison is finally coming to the forefront, and the two discuss lies and such. Harrison defends his lies by pulling out the blood-covered stuffed dog from a few weeks ago, meaning that little piece of evidence will most likely come back to bite Dexter in the rump. Also, why has Harrison been shoved in the shadows for so long? The way Dexter and Harry interacted has a huge effect on the series as a whole, and I don’t buy Dexter’s love for Harrison for a second. The poor kid probably thinks Dexter is an imaginary friend at this point.

Oh yeah, one last twist: Hannah is back. Take it how you want, but she’s back in Dexter’s life, making her entrance by poisoning him and Deb. She was one of the more complex and entertaining characters in Dexter‘s history, meaning I’m glad to have her back. But again, it’s just one more plot that we’re going to have to follow to the end.

By the end of A Little Reflection, all I wish is that Dexter had one more season left in it. There is just so much going on in these final episodes, and I feel that a lot of questions are going to be asked and left unanswered by the time Dexter takes his final bows. Not to say the show is anything less than immensely entertaining, though. It’s just getting a bit cluttered, and we’re in the red zone here. It’s time to start making a few cuts, and there’s nothing Dexter does better than that.
