DC’s Jim Gordon-centric Batman prequel series, Gotham, is quickly picking up steam, as several major cast members signed on for the show this week. First came the news that Southland star Ben McKenzie had been cast as Gordon, then we got word that Alfred Pennyworth, Oswald Cobblepot, and Gordon’s fiance Barbara had been cast as well. Now we have news that Terriers and Sons of Anarchy star Donal Logue will be making the trip to Gotham City, as Jim Gordon’s once-corrupt cigar-chomping partner, Detective Harvey Bullock.

Logue was initially rumored to be up for the role of Jim Gordon, which he himself denied a few weeks ago. He was then rumored to be up for the part of Bullock, so his casting comes as no real surprise. In the comics, Bullock has gone through several changes over the years, but he is frequently characterized as a crooked cop who takes bribes and has ties to organized crime. He eventually goes straight, becoming one of the few men Gordon can trust on the force.

Fox gave some clarification on the version of Bullock whom Logue will be portraying, saying:

Jim Gordon’s partner and mentor, the rough-around-the-edges Detective Harvey Bullock plays loose with police procedure, but he gets results … and he does it with old-school, forceful panache.

So, it looks like some of the character’s darker side will remain intact, and someone like Logue is perfect for the job. He was great as a rule-bending private detective on the criminally underrated (and shamefully short-lived) show Terriers, and his other television work will undoubtedly lend weight to his performance as well.

Gotham has been given a series commitment at Fox, and will explore the early days of rookie detective Jim Gordon as he battles with villains who ultimately become part of Batman’s rogues’ gallery. Gordon is rumored to be investigating a certain famous double homicide that will feature a ten-year old Bruce Wayne, who has yet to be cast. With the show gearing up for production soon, expect to hear more exciting news in the coming weeks.
