The Andor season finale is here, and it’s everything we dreamed of. Almost all the characters converged on Ferrix for Maarva Andor’s funeral, with the ISB setting a trap to catch Cassian, while Luthen’s rebel cell are to kill him for knowing too much.

But neither group could contend with the communal power of the people of Ferrix, who were inspired by Maarva’s self-eulogy to rise up against the Imperials in an explosive and tense fight scene.

The finale delivered on almost every level, with the closing scenes showing Cassian committing his life to the Rebel cause under Luthen. Uniquely for Andor, though, the show doesn’t stop when the credits roll.

The final moments of the show take us into outer space, where we finally learn what the objects being assembled in the prison on Narkina 5 were for. Droids are fitting them into a gigantic reflective array, and when we zoom out we see it’s the Death Star’s Superlaser, which is in the process of being constructed outside the station.

Cassian will eventually give his life to retrieve the Death Star plans, so this is a great call forward to the events of Rogue One. Presumably, next season we’ll see Rebels begin to learn more about the ultimate Imperial super-weapon and begin the fight against it, with the title hero willing to do whatever it takes for the cause.

With the season now complete, we’re willing to say this is the single best piece of Star Wars media since the original trilogy ended back in 1983. The second season shoot is now underway in the U.K., and it’s going to be an excruciating two years until its release. Even so, we’re sure it’ll be worth the wait.
