Your Essential Guide To Marvel’s Defenders On Netflix

Netflix has long led the charge in the transformation of the way in which we access television. Providing international platforms for such quality entertainment as Breaking Bad and Arrested Development, it was the move into original programming that really set the service on the track to greatness. Several seasons of Lilyhammer, Orange Is The New Black and House of Cards later, Netflix has bulging awards cabinet, and a plan for Marvel’s Defenders.

As a comic book team that is renowned for its loose and fluid membership, the Defenders have always maintained the characteristic of being made up of outsiders who work together despite having their own, very specific agendas. Created by Roy Thomas and Ross Andru in 1971’s Marvel Feature #1, the first Defenders line-up included Hulk, the Silver Surfer and Namor, and was led by Doctor Strange.

From 1972 to 1986, Hulk and Doctor Strange remained, but the rest of the group was variously made up of Hellcat, Beast, the Gargoyle, Valkyrie, Night Hawk and Luke Cage. Since its first appearance we have seen The New Defenders, The Secret Defenders, The Last Defenders, The Fearless Defenders and The Ultimate Defenders – and Doctor Strange and Hulk have been involved in most of those incarnations.

With the announcement of their joint miniseries venture in 2013, Marvel and Netflix confirmed that their four 13-episode superhero shows will culminate in a Defenders series, timed to coincide with the end of phase three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It will presumably see the characters of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist working together for the greater good.

All we need now is an Iron Fist casting announcement.
