Unveiled via Entertainment Weekly ahead of its much-anticipated cover reveal – look for AMC’s zombie flagship to adorn multiple covers on September 20th – each still finds our heroes brooding over their current predicament. Negan and his so-called Saviors have run amok, and even after season 7’s nail-biting conclusion, Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s bat-wielding maniac still holds all the power going into The Walking Dead‘s return in October.

Hoping to upend that tyranny altogether are Rick and Ezekiel, after the latter called upon his pet tiger Shiva during the dying moments of season 7. It was enough to save Andrew Lincoln’s leader from having to perform a forced amputation on Carl (Chandler Riggs), much to the dismay of Negan and his goons.

Elsewhere, there’s also an up-close look at Daryl. For years, Norman Reedus’ character has been a favorite amongst The Walking Dead‘s impassioned community, and after enduring a rough ride in season 7, we can’t wait to see what season 8 has in store.

As for Entertainment Weekly’s The Walking Dead coverage, this is merely the tip of the iceberg. In anticipation of the show’s return, EW has slated its new covers for release on September 20th, which will no doubt herald plenty of juicy story clues and high-res photos pulled from AMC’s juggernaut.

It’s shaping up to be a landmark year for The Walking Dead, too, given season 8’s long-anticipated premiere and the historic 100th episode are one and the same. If you’re curious, this extended synopsis ought to give you a fair idea of what’s to come in six weeks’ time.

The Walking Dead season 8 will herald a full-blown war on October 22nd and no, Maggie’s baby won’t be born anytime soon.
