Cardellini knows the situation from experience. She was on the beloved but short-lived Freaks and Greeks, a series that never made it to the end of its first season but was embraced following cancellation. With Bloodline, Cardellini adds to her already impressive resume, with a recent and notable arc in Mad Men, a lengthy run on ER, and a slew of voice acting roles in cartoons. She has been afforded plenty of chances and variety on the screen big and small, but hopes too that those opportunities increase.
“I would love to see more storytellers, more films made with wonderfully complicated and interesting and entertaining female roles,” says Cardellini. “I would love to have some of those roles, and I would love to work with female filmmakers, I think there can always be more of that.”
“I don’t like to look at it terms of scarcity,” she continues. “I like to look at it in terms of opportunity. I think this is a good time for women to making more opportunities for themselves for creating and seizing those opportunities when they come.”
Relocating and spending eight months living in the Florida Keys is an opportunity Cardellini has cherished, especially spending time with such talented actors. The mystery too lends some excitement.
“There were some things I did not know going in,” said Cardellini. “We had an idea of the spine of the story and the big major events that were pitched before I accepted the job. To fill in the blanks and how you get to certain places is sometimes a surprise. It’s an interesting experiment in trust. We all trusted the creators and their vision in exploring a family dynamic.”
That concludes our interview, but we’d like to thank Linda very much for her time. Be sure to catch Bloodline as it’s now on Netflix!
