Expect The CW’s DC TV Crossover Event To Be Even Bigger Next Season

Much was made of The CW's four-night DC TV crossover event last year, but in reality, it really only took place over three nights. Perhaps a minute or two at most of Supergirl was devoted to the "Invasion!" storyline, leaving fans who were expecting more quite disappointed. The action which took place in The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow was great and led to some strong ratings for the network, but that first part was definitely a let down.

Much was made of The CW’s four-night DC TV crossover event last year, but in reality, it only took place over three nights. Perhaps a minute or two at most of Supergirl was devoted to the “Invasion!” storyline, leaving fans who were expecting more quite disappointed. The action which took place in The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow was great and led to some strong ratings for the network, but that first part was definitely a letdown.

It turns out that there’s a good reason for that though, as executive producer Andrew Kreisberg has now shed some light on why the crossover didn’t really get much screentime in Supergirl. Ultimately, it boils down to the fact that the character’s leap from CBS to The CW led to some scheduling issues.

“Because we weren’t aware that we were going to switch ‘Supergirl’ from CBS to CW and it was really going to be part of it — that was the one show that didn’t have built-in shut-down days, so all the other ones did. Melissa [Benoist] ended up being heavily in Flash and then in Arrow, so Supergirl was the one we needed to shut down the most and it was the one that we didn’t have any opportunity to. Now that we’ve gotten the early pickup and we’ve started designing the seasons, we’re building in those dark days, and actually more dark days on Supergirl than the other shows, to make it a little easier… Next year, we’re hoping to do a true four-way crossover.”

Seeing as Supergirl still takes place in a world of her own, many fans assumed that that might have had something to do with why her episode didn’t really play much of a role in “Invasion!” However, it’s a definite relief to know that next season will see things change as we get a true four-night crossover which takes full advantage of all the DC TV shows.

As of right now, we have no idea what direction this event will take, but chances are that the first details will be revealed during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con in July. Who knows, perhaps Superman will get a chance to make his presence felt next time?
