Sherlock has garnered a huge following ever since its debut in 2010 and as a result, it’s acquired some very passionate fans such as myself. Ever since the incredible cliffhanger at the end of Season 2, these fans have been patiently awaiting the third series to get some answers. It’s been a long wait, but the road to Season 3 of Sherlock begins here, as filming finally started today in Cardiff.

With that came the first big news of the new series: the first episode will be called The Empty Hearse.

Those familiar with the Sherlock Holmes mythology will realize that this is no doubt based on the short story written by Arthur Conan Doyle himself, titled The Adventure of the Empty House. This is the story that explains how Sherlock survived his apparent ‘death’ in the Reichenbach Falls and also features the character Colonel Sebastian Moran. We can probably expect him to make his debut on Sherlock in this episode.

Gatiss tweeted this news earlier today with an accompanying picture:

As you can see from the picture, Jeremy Lovering is replacing Paul McGuigan, who had directed most of the episodes from the last two seasons. Lovering’s film In Fear, premiered at Sundance in January. He will direct two episodes while Colm McCarthy will direct the one remaining. McCarthy is also the director of the first episode back in co-creator Steven Moffat’s other big show, Doctor Who.

While it’s exciting to see that filming has finally started, we’re still a long way from seeing it as it is due for a winter release later this year. But fortunately, it doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon as the show’s star Benedict Cumberbatch himself apparently confirmed a fourth series.

For now though, we’ll keep bringing you updates of Sherlock as they come and before you know it, Season 3 will be here.
