Series mastermind George R.R. Martin has hinted at a possible Targaryen-themed Game of Thrones prequel series flickering into life over at HBO.
As part of his latest post over on Not a Blog (h/t ComicBook.com), Martin addressed news that Naomi Watts has signed on for the planned Thrones prequel series, which is now known officially as The Longest Night. That’s exciting in and of itself, as the Powers That Be promise to roll back the clock “thousands of years” to a time when Westeros was still basking in the Golden Age of Heroes.
However, it’s by no means the only Game of Thrones prequel currently in development, and George R.R. Martin just dropped a pretty major clue about the subject matter and indeed direction of successor series #2:
Meanwhile, there are still a couple of other possible prequels in active development. I can’t tell you the subject matter of those projects, no, sorry, wish I could. The readers among you might want to grab a copy of Fire & Blood when it is released on November 20, though.
Fire & Blood are, of course, part of the DNA that makes up the Targaryen family tree, and we know the esteemed author plans to map out the bloody history of Aegon the Conqueror, Dragonstone and everything in between on November 20th. Whether it’s enough to prompt talk of a full-blown Targaryen prequel series is another question entirely…
Closer to home, the eighth and final season of HBO’s Game of Thrones saga has been penciled in for a premiere next year. It’ll be comprised of six feature-length episodes in total – down from last year’s batch of seven, not to mention the 10-episode quota of old – and signal the war to end all wars. Don’t. Miss. It.
