Following on from the news that Deadwood‘s Ian McShane has joined the cast of Game Of Thrones season 6 in an unspecified role, HBO has now announced that he’ll be joined by another screen veteran, Max Von Sydow (The Seventh Seal, The Exorcist, Dune, Minority Report). We do know who he’ll be playing though – and it’s a character we’ve already met.

The legendary actor – who also has a mysterious role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens – will be replacing Struan Rodger as the Three-Eyed Raven: the wizard-like sage who first manifested in Bran’s visions, before being introduced properly in the season 4 finale. He, along with Bran, Hodor, and Meera, was completely absent from the last season but is expected to return with a vengeance next year, having trained the young Stark boy to a near Jedi level.

With this sixth season heading into uncharted territory, we have no idea how the Three-Eyed Raven will factor into the plot – and though his role is said to be a “vital” one, word is Von Sydow won’t have a whole lot of screen time.

Tell us, are you looking forward to season 6 of Game Of Thrones? How to you think Bran and co. will be reintroduced into the story? Sound off with your thoughts below!
