One of my favorite times of the weeks when a new Game of Thrones episode airs isn’t waiting for it to come on. It’s not even the equally important act of watching it. No, when the fan reactions to some of the most epic, sexy, awkward or bloody (or all four) scenes roll in, those are the moments I live for. Humanity, for instance, was at its best this past Sunday when Jaime and Brienne rode a dragon upon St. George. Go on…Google that, I dare you.
GoT has done it again though, and it’s driving fans crazier than ever. This time, though, it’s over a misplaced Starbucks coffee cup. HBO and the coffee mega-chain have both issued “statements” about the matter, both being funny as hell, and now Twitter has weighed in as well.
In case you need a refresher, the scene in which it happens is when the survivors of the Battle of Winterfell are celebrating, drinking their pain and sorrow away. Daenerys is sitting back enjoying the show, watching her (possible) future subjects take in their victory and at some point, when Jon and Tormund are between Dany and the camera, the cup appears onscreen and voila, Starbucks received more free publicity than it’ll ever need.
Or was it free? Was it all really just a big mistake? Maybe there’s an evil genius behind the show playing the internet like puppets. My vote goes to the latter, but who cares? Twitter, like usual, is going off the rails with #CupGate.
