Did The Game Of Thrones Season Finale Reveal Jon Snow’s True Name?

Sunday's season 6 finale of Game of Thrones finally revealed the true parentage of Jon Snow. As many fans rightly predicted, it was Lyanna Stark that gave birth to the current King in The North, and - unless there's some icky Lannister-like behaviour going on - her brother Ned didn't sire the boy at all. Though it's not addressed in the episode, the prevailing theory is that Rhaegar Targaryen was Jon's real father.

Sunday’s season 6 finale of Game of Thrones finally revealed the true parentage of Jon Snow. As many fans rightly predicted, it was Lyanna Stark that gave birth to the current King in The North, and – unless there’s some icky Lannister-like behaviour going on – her brother Ned didn’t sire the boy at all. Though it’s not addressed in the episode, the prevailing theory is that Rhaegar Targaryen was Jon’s real father.

During Bran’s vision, we see Lyanna whisper to her heartbroken brother, and a Reddit user reckons he was able to decipher something very interesting: the name “Jaehaerys.” It does make sense that Rhaegar would want to name his son after his grandfather, as he was generally considered to be the last good/wise Targaryen to sit the Iron Throne. It also makes sense that Ned would choose to rename the child Jon, which is obviously far less recognizable as a Targaryen name.

After re-watching the scene, it’s certainly possible that Lyanna whispers the word – but since there’s no way of knowing for certain, take this theory with a pinch of salt for the time being.
